Tips | Choose a Wedding Photographer

Photography captures life's most unforgettable moments and allows us to relive all of the little snapshots in time that make up our entire lives! With that being said, choosing your wedding photographer is a big decision that requires ample time, thought and research. In compiling your wedding vendor list, it is imperative that you and your fiancée ask yourselves a few key questions to narrow down what is most important to you both when it comes to your photographer. Whether photography is an area in which you are willing to splurge a little or if it is an area of your spending that you really want to keep tight, find some time to delve deep into your research and keep these three super important factors in mind when choosing your wedding photographer: Style, Personality, and Pricing.

Style: Let's start with style, of course! The first question to ask yourself when compiling your list of possible photographers is: What kind of style do I want my wedding photos to reflect? Light and natural, romantic and moody, artsy and playful? Once you narrow down your preferred style, you can really begin to pinpoint photographers whose work embodies the style that you would like for your photos. Seasoned photographers will be able to capture many different moods and moments all in one wedding; however, you will notice that through their lens and editing, each photographer creates a style of their own that is very apparent and signature throughout the collection of their work. Choose one who you feel will capture the true essence of you and your fiancé and be able to tell your love story in a way that speaks to your beginning, present, and future as a couple.

Personality: And by this we mean, mesh with your photographer as well as you mesh with your best friend! We have seen so many of our clients become long time friends and supporters of their wedding photographer and it comes as no surprise seeing as the photographer is the vendor whom captures the essence of the couple. Once you have narrowed your possible photographer list down to serious candidates only, contact them to see if and when they can meet with you to discuss all of the details. Most photographers like to schedule in-person meetings and during that time you will be able to determine not only if their style and pricing/packaging are right for you, but if your personalities are a good fit for each other. After all, your photographer will be with you from beginning to end on your actual wedding day and you want to be sure that you enjoy their company. As a side note, one of the best tools to virtually meet your photographer is through their social media accounts! Browse through their websites and follow them on Facebook and Instagram to see all of their ongoing work and be able to pick up on their personality and style. This may seem like a no-brainier tip in today's world; however, social media connection can oftentimes allow you to narrow down your list to maybe even just one or two possible candidates because the constant outflow of content will allow you to know everything about a photographer before ever meeting with them in person. Plus, who doesn't love to browse through gorgeous wedding photos!

Pricing: Now as we stated before, it is important to decide where you can splurge a little and where you want to save. Some couples are not as enthusiastic about photography as others and may want to focus their attention on another aspect of the wedding. Whereas some couples may be willing to forgo or condense one thing so that they can hire the photographer of their dreams! Researching photography pricing in your local area or niche photography style is your best starting point. Whereas the national average for wedding photography nowadays is $2,814, it is important to consider your location, wedding date and wish-list. That being said, do as much research as possible online or via email before requesting to meet with your photographer in person. Once you schedule an in-person meeting, you are really beyond the big picture and now focusing on the little details of their pricing/packaging and the actual contract. Pricing and packages will include the time spent photographing on the actual wedding day in addition to things such as: a certain number of edited images, hard copy prints, online album access such as a Dropbox link, and so forth. Be sure to discuss all of these details with your wedding photographer and ask any questions that you may have via email or during your in-person meeting.

We hope this post provided some insight into choosing your wedding photographer! Keeping style, personality, and pricing in mind is imperative and can be helpful when choosing any and all of your wedding vendors, not just your photographer. Love Letters to Your Parents |
What a special way to show appreciation and love to those who have supported you since the beginning! Take some time a couple of weeks prior to the wedding to sit down and really put together a heartfelt letter to your parents, grandparents or whoever you wish to honor, and let them know how much they mean to you, how much their support has molded you into the individual that you are today, and how their guidance and lessons throughout the years will attribute to the strength and success of your new marriage.

Dedicate a Song
We all know that music really sets the tone for a wedding and that the mood can go from very sentimental to fun and lively within two seconds! If you have a song that really reminds you of a loved one or somehow was significant to your relationship during your courtship, ask the DJ to dedicate it right before he plays it for the crowd! This can be your introduction song, party songs, private last dance songs and so on.

Thank Your Guests |
Whether it's your wedding party who've been helping you plan for months or your out-of-town friends and family who traveled far and wide to attend your wedding, it goes without saying that weddings require a lot of time and attention! That being said, a quick “thank you” speech from you and your groom is such a gracious gesture that really goes a long way and allows you to thank each and every person in attendance all at once.

Cake To Go |
Ever wondered what happened to all of that delectable wedding cake at the end of the night?! Too often, we see cake being thrown away at the end of the night and oh how that makes us so sad! Send your guests home with the sweetest part of the day, a slice or two of your beautiful and yummy cake! You can easily place cake to-go boxes at the cake table near the end of the evening or if you are having someone serve the cake, tell them that you have to-go boxes and let them handle the process.

Sealed with a Love Letter and Wine |

Yes we said love and wine! On the day of your wedding, write each other a sweet love letter and tuck them away in a sealed wine box with your favorite Chardonnay or Pinot Noir. Keep the box sealed until your one-year anniversary and then open, pop, and CELEBRATE!

Organization and Help: Delegation at it’s Finest

Hiring a wedding planner and/or day-of coordinator can relieve a great deal of stress and responsibility from your plate. Also, it will ensure that your day is being handled by a team of professionals who know exactly how the day should run and have the experience and know-how to keep each and every part of the day on schedule and running seamlessly both behind the scenes and in front of the camera! Check out our post, Why You'll Want a Planner, for more details on why coordinators are so amazingly helpful.

Find Moments to Yourself Throughout the Day

Whether your ceremony is set to begin early in the day or later on in the afternoon, find time to pamper and relax yourself.  Be sure to go to bed early the night before and then begin the day with your favorite workout and a healthy breakfast before getting dressed and on your way! This will instantly relieve some of the big day jitters and fuel you for the long day ahead. If you still have time after this, go to the salon for a massage, manicure, of facial. This will help keep your body and mind at ease and will also prepare you to look your most beautiful for the wedding. Also, make sure that you always have water and snacks around to stay hydrated and fueled!

Continue Communication with your Fiancée

In the midst of everything happening from the break of dawn to “I do”, it's very important to stay in communication with your fiancée, maintaining focus on what this glorious day is truly about: celebrating your shared love and commitment to one another as you begin your new life together! Whether this means texting and calling each other throughout the day, sneaking away for a “first look”, or having your maid of honor and best man pass hand-written love notes between the two of you, be sure to find little ways to come back to one another at least a handful of times!

We hope that these few tips will help you find peace before the ceremony on your beautiful wedding day. Please feel free to like or share this post and contact Celebrate Colorfully with any wedding planning, coordination, or floral inquiries that you may have for your upcoming wedding!

Plan B - Common Wedding Day Mishaps & Solutions

The party planning is wildly fun but the execution and delivery of a wedding can be taxing. Weddings always come with a few hiccups, but with a Plan B in place you won’t have to worry. I don't know how many times I can say having a wedding coordinator is essential, but when executing a plan B they really shine. We make sure Plan B is crafted and executed without causing you any extra anxiety on this special day.

Plan B – Vendors

On rare occasions, vendors don’t fulfill their promises. Some go out of business. Others cancel last minute. In these situations, planners like to utilize their social network for help.  So can you! We recommend reaching out to friends and family or even the Facebook community to see if anyone can help. Maybe they have a friend of a friend in the business! One of our brides found her bartender through her maid of honor’s husband’s college roommate’s new roommate. Can you say Six Degrees of Celebration?

Plan B – “Oh No I Forgot...”

If you forget it, we’re here to get it. From the little things like extra ice to a change of clothes, planners have a team in place to ensure your day continues flawlessly. Designating someone to fetch odds and ends is critical in lowering your stress level day-of. It’s also beneficial to map nearby locations that could be helpful with last minute party necessities. No one wants to burden family members during such a special celebration so taking advantage of the coordinator’s team is ideal.

Plan B - Weather

The most common uncontrollable event for a wedding is the weather, but rainy day weddings are not the end of the world. Weather can be unpredictable but with a day-of coordinator on your team everything is managed. They usually monitor the weather for days leading up to the big day and develop a secondary game plan if necessary. We recommend having a site visit with your coordinator 3-4 weeks in advance to talk about logistics. This prevents a ton of stress on the bride the week leading up to the wedding, and it ensures that everyone is on the same page for what to do in cases of inclement weather. Besides being good luck, rain can lead you to find romance and joy in unexpected ways.

You may be starting to see why day-of coordinators are so crucial. We’re instrumental in making your wedding day Plan B stress-free
